Biolab

At the heart of Seastex, our BIOLAB leads r&D focused on byssus innovation.

The biolab is dedicated to designing, testing, and refining byssus-based materials and products, while simultaneously exploring global markets to uncover new applications for byssus proteins. Through this forward-thinking approach, Seastex is not only advancing the circular economy but also opening new pathways to enhance human well-being. A core focus of the lab's work is on the potential health benefits of byssus proteins, supporting the creation of sustainable solutions that contribute to both a healthier planet and a healthier society.

Byssus protein powder is one of the rarest natural biomaterials on Earth.

Byssus was once spun into golden cloth so fine it was said to weigh less than air. Ancient Mediterranean societies prized it, not only for its rarity but for its ethereal beauty. It takes +/- 4000 mussels to collect 100 grams of  byssus. The raw fibres undergo a meticulous cleaning process, which, combined with manual labor, takes several weeks to a month to transform into a powder material.

  • Derived from mussel farming byproducts.

  • No chemical solvents or harsh surfactants.

  • Non-GMO and cruelty-free.
