Waterproofing (Optional)
The treatment we offer contains elastic water-repellent polymers that have the remarkable ability to bond to the byssus fibres. What makes this treatment unique is that it leaves the spaces between the fibres open and breathable. These water-repellent polymers possess excellent stretch and movement characteristics, enabling them to seamlessly adapt to the fibres during the application process. Once activated, the treatment forms a protective layer without altering the look and feel of the fibre. Its primary function is to safeguard and extend the usable life of the material. Additionally, our treatments are water-based, environmentally safe, and non-flammable, ensuring the well-being of both users and the environment.
Both the natural and waterproofed byssus samples exhibit the ability to absorb water, although the process differs between them. In the case of the natural byssus sample, the water is absorbed in the core of the fibers and remains trapped there. On the other hand, the waterproofed byssus sample also absorbs water, but the fibers reject it, causing the collected water to accumulate below. Additionally, the compressed waterproof sample maintains its shape even after absorbing water, while the natural byssus sample expands as it dries. This distinction in water absorption characteristics highlights the unique properties and behavior of these byssus samples.
